Martha (Philbrick) and John Cass

Here is another entry about my 9th great grandparents, Martha (Philbrick) and John Cass from "The Pioneers of Maine and New Hampshire, 1623 to 1660.   A Descriptive List, Drawn from Records of the Colonies, Towns, Churches, Courts and Other Contemporary Sources" by Charles Henry Pope.

Wisconsin Land Purchases - Dudley Cass & Abraham Cass

Here is a Wisconsin Land Purchase of 80 acres dated March 1, 1848 for my 4th great grandfather, Abraham Cass who was living in Jefferson County, Wisconsin.

Here is another land record purchase for Abraham's son, Dudley Cass, my 3rd great grandfather.   This document is also dated March 1, 1848.   40 acres were purchased.

Dudley purchased a second plot of 40 acres six months later on September 1, 1848, also in Jefferson County, Wisconsin.

Based upon these documents I am able to narrow down the dates the families of Abraham and Dudley moved from Conneaut, Ashtabula County, Ohio to Jefferson County Wisconsin.    They apparently moved sometime after the marriage between Hannah (Birge) and Dudley Cass in 1847 and March 1, 1848 when the land was purchased.

All three parcels of land were located at the Meridian marked 4th PM-1831 MN/WI, township 6-N, range 13-E and Section 2 in Jefferson County, Wisconsin.

Here is a plat map of the properties, which are located in the upper right hand corner marked "Sec 2".

Based upon this plat map, I was able to pinpoint that the properties that the Cass family owned were approximately 9 miles northwest of Fort Atkinson.  The town or village of Oakland is just a couple of miles southwest of where Section 2 is located on the map.

1840 US Census - Abraham Cass

Here is the 1840 US Census I mentioned yesterday for my 4th great grandfather, Abraham Cass (15th) living in Conneaut, Ashtabula County, Ohio.

Unfortunately the other family members were not listed by name so without corroborating evidence, it's essentially a guess.    The marriage of Abraham and Polly's son, Dudley to Hannah (Birge) seven years later is a reasonable indicator they were living in Ohio in 1840.

I had seen family trees documenting the marriage of Hannah (Birge) and Dudley Lyford Cass, my 3rd great grandparents, as having taken place in a variety of places and with several different dates.

Based upon one tree found online that indicated they were married in Conant, Ohio, I found the 1840 US Census which indicates Abraham, my 4th great grandfather, was living in Conneaut, Ashtabula County, Ohio.   Using that information as a guide, I located the Ashtabula County genealogy website.

From their website, I located their marriage index of microfilm from 1811 - 1900 which confirms that Hannah (Birge) and Dudley Lyford Cass were married in Ashtabula County, Ohio in 1847.

Having found the marriage information, I now know the Cass family moved from Ohio to Jefferson County, Wisconsin sometime between 1847 and 1850.

Dudley Cass - Civil War draft registration

While I have no record that my 3rd great grandfather, Dudley Cass (line #15) actually fought in the Civil War, he did register for the draft in Jefferson County, Wisconsin in June 1863.

This document also states Dudley was born in Canada.

1860 US Census - Dudley Cass & Hardy Cass

Here is the 1860 US Census for my 3rd great grandparents, Hannah (Birge) and Dudley Cass (lines 12 and 13).

Hannah and Dudley Cass were living in Oakland, Jefferson County, Wisconsin with my 2nd great grandfather, Hardy Cass (line 14).   Hardy's younger sister Harriet and younger brother Henry were also listed.

This census states Dudley was born in Vermont, contrary to the previous census and other documents.

1850 US Census - Dudley Cass & Abraham Cass

Here is the 1850 US Census for my 3rd great grandparents, Hannah (Birge) and Dudley Cass (lines 8 and 9) and my 4th great grandparents Mary "Polly" (Lyford) and Abraham Cass (lines 22 and 23).

The Cass families were living in Oakland, Jefferson County, Wisconsin.   I believe this was the first census for them living in Wisconsin, having moved from Canada and New Hampshire via Ohio.

This census states Dudley was born in Canada.   Other records have indicated New Hampshire or Vermont.    Here is an interesting webpage that addresses the confusion.

This entry relates to my 8th great grandfather, Joseph Cass*, the son of my 9th great grandparents, Martha (Philbrick) and John Cass, mentioned in yesterday's blog post.

*The birth date of October 5, 1656 has also been found as August 5, 1656.

Martha (Philbrick) and John Cass

Here is a mention of my 9th great grandparents, Martha (Philbrick) and John Cass* (left hand column) in index for the "Founders and Patriots".

John was the first generation of the Cass family in my family tree to move from England to North America, around 1644.

Several online sources dispute the dates, but Martha was born about 1633 and married John Cass around 1647.  

John was born in England about 1620.  He died April 7, 1675 in Hampton, New Hampshire.

*Cass has also been found spelled as "Casse"

Jonathan Cass - death

My 7th great grandfather apparently died September 13, 1745 due to injuries sustained during the Siege of Louisbourg in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Here is a transcription from New Hampshire from 1905 that indicates the date of death was actually September 14, 1745 and that he died from a sore throat, rather than due to injuries from serving in the military.

Here is another document verifying Jonathan (#20) did serve for the colony of New Hampshire and the footnote indicates he died September 13, 1745.

Here is a document* indicating Jonathan's widow, Tabitha (Ring) filed a petition for medical and funeral expenses as the result of her husband's death.  This document also confirms his date of death was September 13, 1745.

Joseph Cass - birth documentation

Here is documentation of my 9th great grandfather,  Joseph Cass who was born in Hampton, New Hampshire August 5, 1656.  

Joseph was the son of my 10th great grandparents, Martha (Philbrick) and John Cass.

This birth record was transcribed by the State of New Hampshire in 1906.

I have seen other family trees that indicate Joseph was born October 5, 1656, but nothing to verify that date.

John Cass - birth documentation

Here is documentation of my 7th great grandfather,  John Cass who was born March 29, 1727 in Kensington, New Hampshire.

John was the son of my 8th great grandparents, Tabitha (Ring) and Jonathan Cass.

This birth record was transcribed by the State of New Hampshire in 1905.

Abraham Cass - birth documentation

Here is documentation of my 5th great grandfather, Abraham Cass who was born October 5, 1779 in Epsom, New Hampshire.

Abraham was the son of Elizabeth (Locke) and Simon Cass.

The state of New Hampshire transcribed a portion of the birth record in 1906, though I do not have the original birth record.

1790 US Census - John Cass and Simon Cass

Here is the 1790 US Census (the first census of the United States) for my 5th great grandfather Simon Cass and my 6th great grandfather John Cass living in Epsom, New Hampshire.

John and Simon are listed on the right side, last two entries on the census page.

Column 1 after the name lists the number of free white males over the age of 16, including heads of families. 
Column 2 lists the number of free white males under the age of 16.
Column 3 lists the number of free white females including heads of families.

The Cass family

This website documents my Cass family bloodline.   John Cass (or Casse) moved from England to North America around 1644.    My great grandmother, Mabel Louise Cass was the last in my family line to carry the Cass name.
